A Guide to Buying Oils
Deciding Which is Best
Unfortunately there are minimal labelling regulations for essential oils in Australia. The majority of inexpensive products labelled '100 per cent essential oil' in supermarkets and discount stores are likely synthetic fragrance oils, which not only have zero therapeutic effects but may even be harmful. When deciding which essential oils to buy a trusted brand is the secret to getting great oils. Look for a company committed to sourcing, testing and certifying their product. Personally, I love to buy Australian-made items however when it comes to essential oils I know doTERRA is a reputable company and their extensive range and endless therapeutic uses is ideal for my family.
Sourcing from expert growers in ideal environments who harvest and distil plants at the right time, partnering with growers to improve production, raising the bar on industry standards and ensuring sustainability are all important to me.

Testing every batch of essential oil for purity and composition both immediately after distillation and upon delivery at the production facility is another reason I love doTERRA.
Certifying every bottle of essential oil produced gives me peace of mind knowing every bottle of oil I purchase is Certified Therapeutic Grade (CTG) and has the correct chemical composition to deliver desired results and is safe for my family.
Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA)
The TGA is a division of the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing, and is responsible for regulating medicines and medical devices. The TGA administers the Therapeutic Goods Act 1989 (the Act), applying a risk management approach designed to ensure therapeutic goods supplied in Australia meet acceptable standards of quality, safety and efficacy (performance). DoTERRA Essential Oils are all TGA approved food grade oils. This means they are 100% natural and pure with NO man made additives in them.
You get what you pay for
Here's an example, Vetiver oil is made from the roots of a grass that’s super hard to harvest. It takes 5 men five full days to harvest enough plant material to make just under 4 litres of Vetiver essential oil. It takes 1 TONNE of peppermint leaves to make just under 4 litres of peppermint oil. Even the most inexpensive oil, Lemon, takes 60 lemons for one 15mL bottle of oil. Do you seriously think that the dollar store can sell a quality product with this much plant material in it cheaply?
Compare the Market
What if you have some essential oils and you love how they work, but there was something that might work better? Would you be willing to try it? MOST essential oils on the market are ‘cut’ with other things. You might be getting 10% of the essential oil mixed in with 90% of a carrier oil (almond oil, coconut oil, etc.). And yes, maybe that oil that you’re using is doing wonders for you (essential oils are powerhouses after all) but what would they do for you if you got 100% instead of 10%? Even if you are happy with your current oils, maybe, just maybe, there’s oil out there that’s better. Keep an open mind.
Do your own research
There’s a lot of people out there preaching misinformation. The beauty of the age in which we live is that there is an abundance of knowledge and lots of self-educating you can do for FREE. Don’t take anyone’s word on anything. Do your own research. There might be weirdos out there in the essential oil world, but you don’t have to listen to them.
